Haven’t posted in a while, but when I do it’s about some random car I won’t end up buying. Well the missus has been pushing me to replace my dd ‘93 escort now that her car is paid off, however we’re still pretty broke so the options are depressing to say the least. The main contender right now is a 2016 Chevy spark, anybody have any experience with those? It’s a crap can for sure but I’ve owned many (see my 1993 Ford escort) and it’s low mileage and cheap. I just really hate GM and the spark is the only GM car i would even consider and that’s only because it’s made in Korea. Some internet research hasn’t turned up anything too bad about them, just curious if any of you have any more experience to share. Honestly I’d rather have a mirage but have been striking out on that front so far and at least the spark is a fun color.

Id take the spark over a mirage any day. Don’t know if it’s as underpowered as the Mitsubishi, but I’m guessing it’s a bit less cramped

I have driven the previous gen. Just don’t. It’s miserable in every way.

The Mirage and associated G4 sedan come in fun colors, too. Mitsubishi has a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty in the states, you can defer payments on a new one with good credit (Mitsu and good credit? It exists), and used c.2017 Mirages can still provide nice features like keyless access and CarPlay.
Plus, there’s kind of a rare factor with the Mitsu.

93 Escort that runs and paid off vs spending money (any amount
)
on a 16 Spark? Escort.
Unless the Spark has something essential safety wise?

If it were me, I’d take whate
ver
the budget is for the Spark or Mirage, go a few years older and a segment or two
up and get a Fit/Civic
/
Corolla
or something else economical but
less of a penalty box.

Why not an Accent or Rio? They are good cars. my 2009 Accent hatch has given me very little trouble at all ov
er 120,000km
s.
Newer Accents and Rios are pretty decent as well?

What’s your budget? Can you go a couple years older and get a Civic or Corolla instead (or a Fit, if you really want something smaller)? A 2011 or 2012 Toyota is bound to have more useful life left in it than a 2016 Daewoo, anyway.

My mom actually has one of those. At least hers is a manual. I wouldn’t say it’s miserable in every way but I certainly would never buy one. Y ou can fit a lot in there for such a small car. And t hey’re actually kind of rare in the US? However, this whole market segment doesn’t strike me as a good trade-off compared to cars one or actually two classes above. You’re much better off with a slightly older Civic or even Cruze.

I’m going to second this. At 6'1" and 175 lbs, I found it intolerably uncomfortable.

Yeah if we’re talking cheap Korean cars I drove my ‘09 Accent sedan hard and it was fine with routine maintenance which was cheap AF.
I believe the only issues with that were either the ball joints or some sort of rubber piece in the suspension - a few times it developed this knocking noise whenever riding over bumps or rough roads. It happened a few times until the final time where it didn’t seem to develop the noise again after the fix.
Newer A ccents (I want to say... maybe 2012 onwards?) have a slight power bump at around 138hp vs. 110, but with my ‘09 I always liked that I could just floor the gas and not worry about going too fast.

I was shopping in this genre of car recently and wound up with a 2011 Fiesta, and I began my search pretty sure I was going to buy a Mirage. Turns out the Mirage holds its value absurdly well up here in Canada, and it offered less in every department than other econo cars, while being more expensive.
The Fiesta had more features, drove better, looked better (imo) and was cheaper than any of the cars I was cross shopping. I’ve been very happy with it so far and I LOATHE fwd and EPS. My only gripe is no temp gauge, which was remedied in subsequent years. It’s been very easy to take apart as well. The auto trans in the fiestas is problematic, so don’t bother unless you want a manual.
I’ve also test driven a low miles Spark and while at first I really liked the gauge cluster, everything else was a let down . That being said it was an auto for my dad.

The Chevy Cruze can be had around 100k miles and less than $5k if you get the manual, which has depreciated more. As long as you get the 1.8 NA engine they are dead reliable and the build quality on my 2012 automatic model (bought at 100k miles and less than $5k two years ago) has the best build quality of an American car of that era I’ve been in. Not bad panel gaps if you excuse the hood shut line and a much better than expected interior. They are hard to find in fun colors but they are out there.
It is just a good small car that is surprisingly practical and nice to drive. I think the complete lack of sporty pretensions and that cursed plastic fake window are the only reason these are overlooked.

Yup, I love mine! Only issues I’ve had are small rust spots that I get sorted when I first notice them...and that’s
A.
partially because of a faulty small accident repair (I hit some ice going 50kph, spun around and the rear-right corner knocked a guardrail just as a stopped), and then a bad
repair by a body repair shop fixing said
faulty
accident repair rusting and
B.
I live in the salty rust-land known as Atlantic Canada.
Otherwise....a coil pack went once, and I had to get the fuel tank replaced (due to reason
B.
up above) not long ago because of a leak on the top of the seam weld along the top and bottom half of the tank. Oh, and I had to get the starter replaced once also because the cable from the starter to the solenoid on the starter actually rusted out....lol....yay for salt! :/

This circuitously worded review I published a while ago may not be terribly helpful.

That’d be a solid nope from me on the Spark. There are many better cars in this class...though I’m not sure how many of them that North Americans actually see.
Unless the Escort is too unreliable, too expensive or too uncomfortable to keep running...I’d stick with the Escort for a bit .
Save your coin for a while. New c ar sales have tanked by nearly a quarter and there’ll be some interesting deals out there in the next six months....

So one of my (non-carguy) best friends has one of these. Not sure what year it is, probably a 15/16. It has the CVT and generally gets driven pretty roughly - it isn’t loved.
Anyways, it’s been fine so far. No big major issues in near 80k miles. It’s not a car I’d necessarily recommend, but I will say it’s less miserable than expected. I do think if it were between a Mirage & Spark, I would take the Chevy any day.
Others to consider - Used Prius. Super reliable and can take abuse. The 2nd gens are good deals nowadays and a battery swap isn’t that hard. I’d also consider a Hyundai Accent or Kia Rio, I never minded driving those when I worked at Enterprise.
